What Was Previously Reported
In 2025, CT Insider reported that the Parente family planned to sell Down the Hatch after nearly five decades of seasonal operation.
That reporting also noted that the restaurant's history dates back to a hot dog stand opened in 1946, and that the Parente family purchased the property in 1976.
More recent reporting from NewsTimes stated that the restaurant was listed at $6.75 million and that a traditional May opening was considered unlikely unless a buyer could move quickly.
What Is Still Not Confirmed
As of now, there is no confirmed public reopening date posted on the restaurant's website.
There is also no confirmed public announcement stating whether Down the Hatch will reopen under the same ownership, new ownership, or a different operating structure.

The listing broker, Tower Realty Corporation, still shows 292 Candlewood Lake Road as an active sale listing at $6,750,000, describing it as "this iconic free standing waterfront destination" with "direct lake access, private boat docks, and licensed outdoor deck dining," and posted a buildout brochure for the property in March 2026. Put those two facts together and the position is unchanged: the 2026 season did not open, the property is for sale, and no reopening has been announced by the owner or the broker.
What a reopening would have to clear
The broker's own description names the assets a buyer is paying for: the lakefront, the private docks and a licensed outdoor deck. Each of those sits inside a system this site covers elsewhere. Docks and shoreline structures on Candlewood are inside FirstLight's federal project boundary and need its authorization, which your Candlewood dock permit does not come with the house explains; the Town of Brookfield's land use and health approvals apply on the upland side; and a new operator needs its own liquor permit. None of that is a reason to expect delay, but it is why "sold" and "open" are separate events, and why the next real signal will be a notice on the restaurant's site or a change on the broker's listing rather than a social media comment.
